ABOUT THE COACHELLA VALLEY

Each of our surrounding cities has something unique to offer to our visitors. The desert comes alive during our peak season which is November through May. On the east-side of the valley we have Indio, known as the City of Festivals, most famous for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Stagecoach Country Music Festival, Polo games, Tamale Festival and the Date Festival. The 17-acre Shields Date Gardens is one of the oldest spots in town. Famous for their date shakes and gardens, you can enjoy an outdoor meal overlooking the date tree fields. Make sure to stop at the Date Shed music venue for live entertainment on weekend nights. For a little history visit the La Quinta Resort and Spa which is one of the first hotels built here in 1926 by JP Morgan. The golden age of Hollywood stars flocked to this resort to get away from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood. Indian Wells comes alive in March hosting the BNP Paribas Tennis Tournament. Tennis fans from around the world come to watch world class tennis which runs for two weeks. Palm Desert is the hub of the valley located in the center of all surrounding cities. 

Starting in November with the annual Golf Cart Parade on El Paseo, Miracle on El Paseo in December and the Palm Springs Life Fashion Week-Food & Wine event that lasts for a full week. There are countless choices of restaurants while strolling and shopping on this famous strip as well.  Enjoy the College of the Desert Street Fair every weekend starting up in the fall with shopping galore, live music and food.  Cathedral City hosts a fun Balloon Glow event on the grounds of their city hall which is a great family event, and will soon have a grand opening of a new Indian Casino. The most famous city, Palm Springs, has a variety of events during season starting in December with the annual Christmas Parade held on South Palm Canyon Drive. The city vibe is fresh and colorful with mid-century modern neighborhoods. Shopping, dining, museums and nightlife bring thousands of tourists every year.  Their biggest events include Palm Springs Modernism Week, Palm Springs International Film Festival, Pride Week and Splash House. Vintage clothes and retro furniture boutiques are located throughout the downtown area.

 

THINGS TO DO OUTDOORS

With over one hundred championship golf courses to choose from you can guess why golfers flock to our valley!  Most popular are the PGA courses designed by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklas. Silverock in La Quinta is nestled against the 3D scenic mountains where Bighorn sheep can be spotted when you least expect it!  Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert offers two challenging courses famous for it’s 7,000 yards of water and sand beds. The choices are endless for all levels of golfers in the Coachella Valley.

For family activities explore: The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, Palm Springs Air Museum, Palm Springs Tramway, Palm Springs Surf Club Waterpark, the Children’s Discovery Museum, Escape Room Palm Springs and Moorten Botanical Gardens. Old West 1880s Pioneertown is great fun that will transport you back to the wild wild west. The famous saloon and venue Pappy and Harriet’s not only has great barbeque but also hosts A-list concerts on this property during the high season months.. Pioneertown was built by Hollywood western actors Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. They created a Wild West playground including real saloons, inns, a post office and even a vintage bowling alley! Western films were made here in the 1940’s and 50’s.

Marvyn’s Magic Theater is the newest addition to the valley for a fun night of comedy and magic for ages 21 and over, and is already rated #1 in La Quinta for a comedy venues. The McCallum Theater offers top live Broadway shows and entertainers such as Willie Nelson, Cats, The Jersey Boys, West Side Story, Bernadette Peters, Riverdance just to name a few. For big name concerts our Indian Casinos are the place to be! Fantasy Springs Casino, Agua Caliente Casinos and Morongo Casino feature popular concerts in their state-of-the-art indoor concert venues. Smaller theaters include The Palm Canyon Theater in Palm Springs and the Indian Wells Theater located on the campus of California State University of San Bernadino, Palm Desert. 

TOURS

There are many great tour companies to choose from covering all points of interest in the desert.  For nature types you can explore with Desert Adventures-Red Jeep Tours, Big Wheel Adventures and Adventure Hummer Tours. Go horseback riding into the canyons at Smoke Tree Stables in Palm Springs.  ATV Experience offers exciting guided ATV rides on desert trails that you can operate on your own or drive a 6 person dune buggy vehicle. Bring your camera to capture the beautiful desert landscapes! For more city-like tours look into 5 Star Adventures, Palm Springs Mod Squad Tours, MidMod Design Tours, The Modern Tour and PS Architecture Tours.  They will delight you with the history of Palm Springs in the glory days of Hollywood and tell stories of famous architects who designed numerous homes and buildings that have been preserved to this day. The Annenberg Estate in Rancho Mirage offers guided tours allowing the public to access the great home of Walter and Leonore Annenberg called Sunnylands. At least eight US Presidents have been guests there during the Annenberg’s lifetime.

Desert Adventures Red Jeep Tours takes you to Painted Canyon, the San Andreas Fault line, and the other must-see destinations. Make sure to take your camera, you wont want to miss these views and sunsets.

ATV Experience is a private guided tour that stops at the most famous locations. Historic places to visit are: the Sunnyland Estate founded by the Annenberg Foundation. This famous estate hosts several of world leader as they gather to discuss foreign affairs. Another stop to visit is the Frank Sinatra mid-century house. The most popular are: the Palm Springs Art Museum, The Museum of Architecture and Design, Cabot’s Pueblo Museum, The Children’s Discovery Museum and the Palm Springs Air Museum featuring World War II combat aircraft. On Thursday nights from 4pm-8pm the Palm Springs Art Museum is free to the public. Enjoy the lively Palm Springs Street Fair after, held every Thursday from 6-9pm.

The Coachella Valley’s ever-growing food scene satisfies even the pickiest of connoisseurs. Choose from a multitude of top-rated chef driven restaurants. Enjoy the College of the Desert Street Fair every weekend starting up in the fall with shopping galore, live music and food.  Cathedral City hosts a fun Balloon Glow event on the grounds of their city hall which is a great family event, and will soon have a grand opening of a new Indian Casino. The most famous city, Palm Springs, has a variety of events during season starting in December.

HIKING AND EXPLORATIONS

There are hundreds of hikes to choose from. There are many suitable for all ages. Pack a lunch and bring plenty of water for your day of adventure!

Enjoy the moderate labyrinthine hikes in the Indian Canyons located in the southernmost area of Palm Springs. Hike through the colorful Indian rock art and streams of oasis and waterfalls in one of the four canyons, Andreas, Murray Palm or Tahquitz Canyons. 

Looking for more of a challenging hike? The Araby Trail is a six-mile ascent 1,380 elevation gain. The rocky terrain and sharp incline are sure to give you a good workout. The valley view unfolds as you hike up.

A few full day hikes include: the Coachella Valley Preserve, Whitewater Canyon Preserve, Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, and Joshua Tree National Park. However, there are plenty more.
